The trainer and uncle of Floyd Mayweather believes there there is just one fighter in boxing history that is better than the former pound-for-pound superstar.
‘Money’ Mayweather is often considered the best fighter of the modern era, proving his credentials throughout the course of his professional career which spanned between 1996 and 2017.
He captured world titles across five weight classes during his tenure, ranging from super-featherweight to super-welterweight and defeating the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao along the way.
He drew the curtain on his campaign in 2017 just a few months after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover showdown, walking away from the sport with an unbeaten record of 50-0. Floyd considers himself the greatest of all time, but it is not an opinion shared by one man who was closest to him through it all.
Speaking to Boxing Scene, Roger Mayweather – who trained his nephew from around 2000 until 2012 – ranked the late great Sugar Ray Robinson ahead of Floyd, calling the six-time world champion the ‘greatest ever’.
“[Floyd] is ranked right behind Sugar Ray Robinson. He won seven world titles didn’t he? He beat everyone from 130 to 154. Where would you put him at? Ray Robinson is the greatest ever period. I don’t care what circumstance, Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter in the history of boxing.”
Robinson is often regarded as being the greatest to have ever graced the sport, fighting on no less than 201 occasions as a professional throughout the course of his storied career.
He reigned as the world welterweight champion for half a decade between 1946 and 1951 before he eventually made the move up to middleweight, winning the world championship on five occasions within a nine year period.
