Sheffield Wednesday could face a battle to keep hold of the stopper this summer amid attention from elsewhere. SWFC are preparing for another year in the Championship.

Charles, 19, became their number one during the latter stages of last season ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion loanee James Beadle. He is under contract in South Yorkshire until June 2027 so the Owls are under no pressure to sell him just yet and can wait for the right offer to come in for his signature.

In this latest update regarding his situation, reporter Nixon has claimed on his Patreon that Leicester City and Southampton are keen. They were relegated from the Premier League recently along with Ipswich Town.

The Star’s Alex Miller has recently delivered his verdict on the player, as per a report by DerbyshireLive: “The Northern Ireland number one is a goalkeeper of huge potential and has all the skills to make it in the top division. He’s just turned 20 and – assuming he’s not the made the latest piece of family silver sold off to keep the lights on – is a player I’d expect to grab some admirers along the way.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles wanted

Sheffield Wednesday will hope that Charles stays put for this term at least. SWFC don’t need to cash in on him right now unless an offer that they can’t refuse comes in for his services.

The Northern Ireland international, who has seven caps under his belt, joined the Owls back in 2021. Prior to his move, he rose up through the academy ranks at Manchester City and was a regular for the Premier League giants at various different youth levels.

Charles was handed his first professional contract back in October 2022. He has since made 15 first-team appearances in all competitions.

What now for Pierce Charles at Sheffield Wednesday?

Charles should stay at Sheffield Wednesday for another 12 months at least. SWFC can offer him regular football which will benefit him at this stage of his career.

If he left for another team, he may be unlikely to get into a starting XI and could be loaned out due to his tender age. Therefore, he shouldn’t push for a move.

Sheffield Wednesday start the new campaign with an away trip to Leicester City. The Foxes were relegated from the top flight last season after finishing in the bottom three with Southampton and Ipswich Town. They then face Bolton Wanderers in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
