A police investigation has begun after Ipswich player Jack Taylor was apparently struck by a Birmingham City supporter.

The alleged incident happened on Friday night, during the match that saw the teams draw 1-1 as they kicked off their Championship season at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

After forward George Hirst scored a penalty in injury time, Ipswich’s celebrations led to a melee involving several players from both sides, during which Taylor was allegedly assaulted.

In a statement, Blues bosses said they were aware of the incident and had a “zero-tolerance policy towards violent and anti-social behaviour inside or around our stadium”.
