Jermell Charlo shared his thoughts on the punching power of Canelo Alvarez after suffering a knockdown in their 2023 clash.
Charlo was beaten by Canelo when he stepped up from super-welterweight to challenge for the undisputed world super-middleweight championship just shy of two years ago.
The Mexican superstar put on an impressive display to hand Charlo just the second defeat of his career, with all three of the judges at ringside scoring the contest unanimously in his favour after scoring a knockdown in seventh against a largely negative challenger.
As Canelo prepares to return to the ring and make the first defence of his undisputed crown against fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in Las Vegas next month, he will once again be defending against a naturally smaller man who may have to worry about the power coming his way.
Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Charlo branded Alvarez a ‘a motherf***ing beast’ and said it was the first time he had truly been hurt.
“Canelo’s a motherf***ing beast. Maybe I felt that more because it was my first time at this weight division.
“I wish I could’ve gained a little bit more weight, but I can’t control my body like that. That was my true first time feeling a woozy shot.”
Charlo is yet to make his return to the ring since the defeat. Crawford, should he withstand Canelo’s shots and to win the bout, will become the first man to have won all four belts in three divisions.
