It’s that day of the year where many flock to their chosen chippy to secure fish and chips for their Good Friday evening meal and queues are expected at shops up and down the country. This year the ECHO headed down to Steve’s Fish & Chips in Aigburth to speak to locals at the start of the Easter weekend.

With the rain pouring this evening, people piled their way inside to shelter from the downpour, but this didn’t dampen any spirits as there was clear demand for the British delicacy with people happy to queue in the drizzle outside.

Brother and sister Jackie and Christopher Bradley from Aigburth, have fish each Good Friday – a tradition they started during childhood. They both visited Steve’s to cater for their family gathering today.

Christopher said: “It’s something we’ve done through my family for generations to be honest, we don’t have meat on a Friday – we try to avoid it when we can.”

Christopher added: “She [mum] was adamant we got fish today!”

Jackie said: “We are all at my house having fish and chips!”

Peas and gravy were items also ordered to compliment the meal, alongside the ‘large fish’ Christopher ordered.

Christopher said he would queue for awhile especially if it’s a good fish and chip shop. He said: “You’re prepared to wait for something that’s going to be good.”

Also in the queue was Jayne Crookall who lives on Penny Lane. Jayne was in-line to secure fish and chips for ‘the whole family’. She said: “We’ve never eaten meat on Good Friday and we have always come here as well because the fish and chips are the best.”

Gerry Kelly who lives in Aigburth was eagerly waiting in the chippy line. Gerry said: “It’s the best meal to have on a Friday after a busy day at work isn’t it; week at work even!”

When asked do you visit a chippy annually to mark Good Friday, Gerry said: “Yes, this [Steve’s] is the best one in Liverpool so you know, you’ve got to go to Steve’s.”

Gerry has been to Steve’s for 30 years and while some may differ from the go-to Good Friday fish, he said: “Its got to be fish and chips from Steve’s.”
