Brex, has obtained its Payment Institution (PI) licence in the European Union via the Netherlands, to deliver its full suite of financial solutions directly to EU-based enterprises, reinforcing its commitment to powering the next generation of global, high-growth businesses.
The newly acquired licence authorises Brex to operate across all EU member states, enabling direct issuance of commercial credit cards and execution of payment services, including direct debits and credit transfers. This capability removes previous geographical constraints, allowing Brex to serve European-headquartered companies alongside subsidiaries of multinational enterprises, with locally accepted payment solutions and seamless integration into the EU’s financial infrastructure.
Building on its global reach serving customers in over 200 countries and enabling transactions in more than 60 currencies Brex is further exploring regulatory pathways to extend services to the United Kingdom in the coming months. The EU licence is a strategic enabler for Brex to bring its market-leading corporate cards, expense management, and treasury solutions to a wider customer base, addressing the needs of European finance teams seeking agility, transparency, and cross-border coherence.
“Over the last seven years, we’ve built the global payments infrastructure to support customers in more than 200 countries and 60+ currencies,” said Pedro Franceschi, CEO and Co-Founder of Brex. “This licence takes us one step further, enabling Brex to directly serve EU-based businesses and their subsidiaries with locally accepted cards, less friction, and best-in-class payment capabilities.”
Brex’s differentiated approach anchored in its proprietary global payments infrastructure, allows it to deliver a fully integrated solution without reliance on third-party providers. This competitive advantage positions Brex ahead of many U.S.-based rivals that have limited multi-currency capabilities and fragmented geographic coverage.
Brex will begin onboarding select EU customers through a phased rollout in the coming months, with full operational capability expected by early 2026. To support this expansion, the company has established its European hub in the Netherlands, complete with a local board and dedicated teams in sales, operations, and customer success. The initial team of twelve will scale in line with Brex’s European growth ambitions.
