The man who has run York Hospital for five years is leaving for another high profile health care job in the city.

Simon Morritt has been chief executive of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since August 2019.

He’s leaving that role to become chief executive of Nimbuscare in the autumn.

Nimbuscare is a GP-led, not-for-profit community health provider based in York.

It came to prominence during the Covid pandemic, when it led the vaccination programme in the city.

Today it delivers a range of primary and community health care, from a GP frailty crisis hub to blood testing.

Simon, who has more than 20 years of experience as a chief executive across a number of Yorkshire NHS trusts, will take up his new post in autumn.

He said: “I am excited to be joining Nimbuscare at such an important and dynamic time.

“The opportunity to lead a GP-led organisation that plays a central role in community-based care is something I greatly value.

“I look forward to working closely with system partners to build on Nimbuscare’s progress and contribute to delivering the ambitions of the NHS 10 year plan.”

Chair of Nimbuscare, Professor Mike Holmes, told YorkMix: “Simon’s got a huge wealth of experience.

“When he applied, we were delighted – he fit the bill in terms of exactly what we were looking forward to take us into the next phase of our development.

“We felt he was a great match and would enable us to work to build on the relationships he has with system stakeholders, while working towards making the NHS 10 Year Plan come to reality locally.”

Prof Holmes added: “We’re trying to treat people out of hospital wherever we can.

“His experience will enable us to put systems in place that allow us to manage patients upstream from hospital, and that will take pressure off the system.”

That could help to cut waiting lists by targeting care “where we can have significant impact, make sure it’s delivered in a timely way, in a safe way, and take pressure off the system where it’s feeling it the most”.
