Dual classic winner Sovereignty remains the leader of the latest NTRA Top Thoroughbred poll, which saw no change in the standings since last week’s edition. The sophomore son of Into Mischief took over the top spot in the poll after winning the Grade 2 Jim Dandy.

Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty is eyeing a third top-level score against his age group in the G1 Travers Stakes on Aug. 23. The Godolphin homebred breezed four furlongs in 48.89 at Saratoga on Aug. 9.

The Bill Mott trainee’s stacked resume also includes victories in the G2 Jim Dandy and G2 Fountain of Youth. His only defeat this year was a runner-up finish in the G1 Florida Derby.

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables LLC’s Mindframe is ranked second in the poll. The Todd Pletcher-trained 4-year-old is undefeated on the year, with victories in the G1 Stephen Foster, G1 Churchill Downs Stakes, and G2 Gulfstream Park Mile.

G1 Whitney Stakes winner Sierra Leone fills the third spot on the poll. The Chad Brown-trained son of Gun Runner earned his first win of the year in the Whitney at Saratoga on Aug. 2. He was second in this year’s Stephen Foster and third in the G2 New Orleans Classic.

None of the NTRA’s Top 10 is expected to compete during the upcoming weekend.

No. 5 Thorpedo Anna and No. 7 Book’em Danno could make appearances on the Travers undercard Aug. 23 in their respective divisional races. The final weekend of August could see clashes between No. 4 Journalism and No. 6 Nysos in the G1 Pacific Classic on Aug. 30, and Mindframe and Sierra Leone in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Aug. 31.

Other horses receiving votes: Highland Falls (22), White Abarrio (18), Ways And Means (10), Seismic Beauty (10), She Feels Pretty (9), Magnitude (9), Keepmeinmind (9), El Cordobes (6), Baeza (5), Fort Washington (4), Laurelin (3), Ewing (2), Excellent Truth (2), Carl Spackler (2), Hit Show (2), Gosger (1), Forever Young (1), Sweet Azteca (1).

The weekly Top Thoroughbred Poll represents the leading contenders for Horse of the Year. Rankings in the poll are on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis with first-place votes in parentheses.
