A new study has named several Midlands towns and cities among the worst places to live in the country.

Analysts examined data in key areas, such as crime rates, house prices, schools, and NHS access, to find out where residents have it best.

According to a study, Walsall is the worst place to live in the West Midlands and one of the worst in the country.

The Black Country town was ranked in 278th place out of 294 local authority areas, showing how far down the list it was.

Other places in the wider Midlands given poor ratings included Derby (290), Leicester (273rd), Birmingham (265th), Sandwell (259th) and Coventry (255th).

Perhaps surprisingly, Solihull was named as one of the worst places to live in the region.

While generally thought of as a more prosperous and upmarket part of the West Midlands, Solihull’s overall rating was dragged down by performance of NHS services as well as lack of amenities.

Parts of the West Midlands were dragged down by their crime rates.

Birmingham has one of the worst in the country in 272nd place for crime, with Wolverhampton in 251st, Sandwell 231st and Walsall 230th.

Our region also suffers when it comes to NHS access and performance.

But house prices tend to be lower than average across much of the West Midlands.
