Manchester United’s under-21s National League Cup tie against Tamworth was abandoned after midfielder Sekou Kone suffered a head injury on Wednesday evening.
Kone fell to the ground following a clash of heads with a Tamworth player towards the end of the first half at the Lamb Ground.
Both sets of players left the pitch and returned to the dressing room as Kone received lengthy treatment from United’s medical staff on the pitch.
The 19-year-old midfielder was subsequently stretchered off, before Tamworth issued a statement that the match would be abandoned.
United later confirmed that the teenager is conscious, stable, and communicating with United’s medical team. He has been taken to hospital as a precaution for further checks.
“Due to the medical situation, we are forced to abandon tonight’s fixture, details will be revealed in due course,” the Tamworth posted on X.
“We would like to wish safe travels to all the Man United fans, staff and players. We especially wish Sekou Kone a speedy recovery.”
Kone joined United from Malian side Guidars FC in a deal worth just over £1million ($1.3m) last summer.
The Mali Under-17 international is yet to make a senior appearance for United but was named as an unused substitute by Ruben Amorim in three matchday squads last season.
Travis Binnion’s under-21s side were opening their campaign in the National League Cup, which sees youth sides playing in Premier League 2 face clubs from English football’s fifth tier.
