The Ibrox boss was asked about interest in the player and said: “I’ve never spoken to Nobel Mendy.”

The central defender currently plays for Real Betis in Spain’s La Liga.

The Rangers Review reported earlier this week that the Govan club would pay £2million for Mendy, making him their tenth signing of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old is understood to be keen on a move to Glasgow, despite interest from Rayo Vallecano.

He is expected to sign a long-term deal until the summer of 2029, with an option to extend the move for a further season.

The speculation about Mendy comes as Rangers have agreed a £6million deal to sell left-back Jefte to Brazilian club Palmeiras.

The club will make a considerable profit on the 21-year-old, who joined them for £600,000 last summer.
