The opening game of the new Premier League season was earlier stopped in the first half after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by someone in the crowd.
Referee Anthony Taylor paused the game to talk to Semenyo as Liverpool prepared to take a corner.
Taylor then jogged to the technical areas to speak to Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his Bournemouth counterpart Andoni Iraola.
Taylor also spoke to both captains, Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith, before the game resumed around two minutes later.
An anti-discrimination message was then read out to the Anfield crowd once the half-time whistle had blown.
The former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, working as a pundit for the UK broadcaster Sky Sports, said the alleged incident had “overshadowed what should be an amazing night”.
He added: “It’s despicable. I can’t even begin to think what will be going through someone’s mind. However, it’s happened, it will keep on happening and it’s a sorry state.”
