A new list of the best places to live in England has been compiled by experts.

Official data on a number of factors was taken into consideration when judging counties, towns and cities.

A number of posh, picturesque and affluent places in the Midlands made it into the top 50.

Unsurprisingly, it was these more rural, peaceful and prosperous areas that made it to the top of the list, rather than the industrial, built-up towns and cities – perhaps the places many families aspire to move or retire to one day.

Areas were ranked by experts based on data covering a range of areas, such as crime rates, house prices, schools and NHS access.

The best place to live in the Midlands, according to the list, is the Staffordshire Moorlands.

It was ranked 20th out of 294 local authority areas in England.

That was followed by the Nottinghamshire areas of Bassetlaw; Newark and Sherwood; and Broxtowe.

Other Midlands beauty spots like High Peak and the Derbyshire Dales also made the top 50.

Data came from sources such as the Land Registry, Home Office, NHS and ONS.

  • Bassetlaw – 24
  • Newark and Sherwood – 31
  • Broxtowe – 33
  • High Peak – 34
  • Rutland – 38
  • Derbyshire Dales – 39
  • Stratford-upon-Avon – 41
  • Newcastle under Lyme – 46
  • North Warwickshire – 50

The very best areas tend to be in the far north of England, like Cumbria and North Yorkshire, and the far south in Devon and Cornwall.

Although number one on the list was the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.
