The Met Office has warned of “thundery” and “heavy” showers in parts of the UK from tonight, as “changeable” conditions are forecast for later this week.
It comes after the UK has experienced its fourth heatwave of summer so far, with temperatures surpassing 30C in parts of the country over the past week.
The heatwave was set to last throughout the weekend but in some parts of the country the temperature dropped by a few degrees which resulted in a cooler weekend for some.
Although the heatwave is over, temperatures are set to remain in the 20Cs for most of the country.
The Met Office’s UK-wide forecast for Monday evening (August 18) reads: “A few showers continuing to affect the southwest overnight, perhaps turning thundery at times. Otherwise North Sea cloud probably expanding back inland, with a little drizzle in places.”
In a post shared on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the Met Office said: “Monday morning will start quite cloudy for most of us, perhaps with the odd spot of drizzle in the east.

“Sunnier skies in some western areas and slowly brightening up elsewhere through the morning. Showers possible in the far southwest, these locally heavy and thundery.”
Looking at the long-range forecast for the UK between Friday, August 22, and Sunday, August 31, the Met Office has warned of “changeable” conditions, impacted by Storm Erin.
The forecast reads: “High pressure is likely to be the dominant feature at first bringing widely fine and dry weather whilst a generally northerly flow leads to rather cool conditions.
“This will be increasingly eroded from the west as frontal systems start to move in from the Atlantic through the weekend, leading to more changeable conditions.
“Whilst this is happening a deep area of low pressure is likely to develop in the North Atlantic, linked to Hurricane Erin. This likely progresses towards the UK through the early part of the week.”

The forecast finishes with: “The changeable period will likely continue through the last week of August, especially in the north and west, with a small chance of widely wetter and windier weather developing. The evolution of this is highly uncertain though.”
