Selections based on a heavy track.

Race 1

3. Burma Star made a dash for home first-up at Canterbury only to be cut down late, but he did fight quite well when the winner stuck the head in front. A slight change of gear might be significant, and he’s had the heavy track run under his belt. Can only be better for it and hard to beat. 10. Gambers was given her chance in stakes company at her second start before a spell on the back of a handy debut. Both runs on good tracks. Trialled nicely on heavy ground leading into this and stays under notice. 4. Defiance is on debut, and you couldn’t fault his two trials in the past few weeks, including the latest on a heavy track. Any support would be significant.

Race 2

10. Koibito found it too sharp for her on debut, getting back early, but she still ran a nice race behind Nashville Jack at Randwick last month. Back in class and up in trip are pluses for her, and she should be a lot more competitive. 13. Magenta Skies is a nicely bred filly making her debut, having taken a little time with a couple of trials in the autumn. Found the line under a nice hold to win her latest on heavy ground at Randwick two weeks ago. Respect. 9. Spice Prawn has tended to get a long way back in her races this time in which isn’t helping. Ran on into fourth at Canterbury last time after a close second to Without Peer fresh. The latter’s a handy form line. Worth another chance.

Race 3

7. Southern Heiress is a filly on the way up, and she followed a runaway Newcastle maiden with a solid effort to remain unbeaten at Canterbury two weeks ago. She was strong on the line there and is a good chance again. 8. Vanessi has a 2kg turnaround on Southern Heiress for their clash, and that gives her a shot at turning the tables. Was only first-up there, so now a bit fitter and she’s a threat. 6. Fleeting Spirit is trialling nicely for a handy first-up performance, though she’s not been tested on a wet track on race day. Improved with each run last time in, and if she does that again, she should run well.

Race 4

4. Prima Bella is a proven heavy tracker, and she ran right up to some good support when scoring over this track and distance three weeks ago. Up in weight but in career best form at the moment and no reason she won’t go close. 2. President is an interesting runner now with the Jason Coyle stable and gelded. Won a maiden first-up last time in, and his two recent trials have been in good company. If he handles the heavy on race day he could surprise. 6. Bev’s Nine has won two from two at the provincials with his debut win on a soft 7. Toughed it out to score at Kembla Grange back onto a good track almost a month ago. Has to be included in the chances.
