A non-statutory enquiry has been opened into the prescription of epilim, an epilepsy drug that was given to some women in Ireland during pregnancy.
The drug contains sodium valproate, and since the 1970s, it has been known that this ingredient can harm babies in the womb.
According to local Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway Walsh, mounting evidence has shown that this drug can cause harm to unborn babies, which can result in autism and other disabilities.
