Celtic are reportedly set to make a push for Dutch winger Calvin Stengs in the final weeks of the transfer window.

The Hoops have made a fine start to the season, beating St. Mirren and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership without conceding a goal, before thrashing Falkirk 4-1 in their League Cup round of 16 tie.

Celtic have a Champions League qualifier against Kazakh side Kairat Almaty to look forward to on Wednesday.

However, Brendan Rodgers still looks set to further strengthen his pack.

Celtic make contact with Calvin Stengs

The Daily Record report (18 August) that Celtic have already made contact with the representatives of Feyenoord winger Stengs, who is on the lookout for a new club after a tough year.

AZ youth product Stengs was initially a key player for Feyenoord after joining from Antwerp in 2023, notching eight goals and 17 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions to help the Rotterdam giants finish second in the Eredivisie and win the KNVB Cup.

That form helped Stengs pick up eight caps for the Netherlands, but a series of knee, ankle and hamstring injuries derailed his 2024/25 campaign, limiting him to just 16 appearances across all competitions — in which he registered a goal and four assists.

Stengs has been an unused substitute in all four of Feyenoord’s competitive games so far this campaign, making it clear that he needs a quick solution to get his career back on track.

The winger has now entered the final two years of his contract at De Kuip, and it’s understood he could be available for a cut-price fee this summer — with Celtic priming themselves to take advantage.

Celtic boast arguably Scotland’s most dangerous attacking player right now in Daizen Maeda, who registered 33 goals and 11 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions last season.

However, the Japan international’s form has attracted attention elsewhere, with Premier League duo Brentford and Tottenham linked with his services this summer.

Even if Maeda stays, Rodgers is terribly short of depth in attacking areas, especially with Portuguese star Jota out long-term with an ACL injury.

Stengs can play on the wings and as an attacking midfielder, offering Rodgers brilliant versatility.

And while the last year of his career has been a struggle, the winger has proven in the past that he can produce at a high level, and at 26 years old, still has time well on his side.

This could be a prime situation for Celtic — who are also linked with Jamie Vardy — to manipulate, strengthening themselves further as they seek to overtake Rangers’ league title haul for the first time since the 1920s.
