A Birmingham Poundland store that was not featured on a recently-published list of branch closures has shut down for good.

The discount giant confirmed the locations of 48 store closures earlier this week, with more planned for September.

Clearance sales were launched at 15 sites across the country ahead of imminent the imminent closure, with bosses saying the plans would ‘allow us to get back on track’.

Three Birmingham stores were included on the wider closure list, with Kings Heath and Sheldon branches set to shut on August 24 and Erdington to follow on August 31.

The prominent store at Selly Oak’s Battery Retail Park was not featured on the list, but has since permanently closed down.

Following an ‘everything must go’ sale, signs in the window of the unit in between The Gym Group gym and TK Maxx told shoppers: “Sorry, this store is now closed.”

There is another store nearby in Selly Oak Shopping Park, which replaced Wilko after the bargain retailer fell into administration.

Darren MacDonald, retail director at Poundland, said previously: “While our anticipated network of around 650 to 700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we’re closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track.

“We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes, but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations.

“Work is underway to with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles.”
