Altrincham residents are among the highest inheritance tax payers in the UK, new analysis has revealed.
Estates in the Altrincham and Sale West constituency paid an average of £451,220 in inheritance tax during 2022/23, placing the area in the top 10 nationally and making it the only location outside London to feature in the rankings.
The figures, compiled by law firm Irwin Mitchell using government data, put the Greater Manchester constituency alongside some of the capital’s wealthiest boroughs including Kensington, Chelsea and Hampstead.
Only nine other constituencies across the UK recorded higher average inheritance tax payments, with Kensington topping the list at £1.375 million per estate.
Andrea Jones, National Head of Irwin Mitchell’s Private Client Advisory team, said the results reflect rising property values and wealth in the region.
“Altrincham’s inclusion in the top 10 reflects the rising value of estates in the North West,” she said.
“With property prices and asset portfolios growing, families here face increasingly complex inheritance tax challenges.”
The news comes as the government prepares to introduce significant changes to inheritance tax rules following the autumn budget.
From April 2026, business and agricultural property reliefs will be capped at £1 million, while unused pension funds will become subject to inheritance tax from April 2027.
