Wrexham might regret missing out on one player following his excellent performance over the weekend.

Since battling it out in League One for promotion, Wrexham and Birmingham City have been linked with a number of the same players this summer.

Tommy Doyle chose Birmingham after the Red Dragons showed an interest in the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder.

Doyle ‘struggled’ on his debut league outing for the Midlands outfit, while one player both teams missed out on was in superb form during gameweek two.

Wrexham and Birmingham wanted to sign Harry Darling back in May, ahead of his contract with Swansea City expiring.

However, the centre-back instead opted to snub both clubs, with Darling moving to Norwich City instead.

Wrexham lost to West Brom in gameweek two, while Norwich were in action against Portsmouth.

They secured a 2-1 victory over Pompey, with Darling scoring the opening goal and earning the pre-assist for their second of the day.

Following the clash, the former Wrexham target has received high praise from Liam Manning for his goal and the role he played in Josh Sargent’s effort.

As per Pink Un, he said: “As is often the case with Harry, I think he was messing around at the end of training in the week.

“We watched them against Oxford, to be fair, and thought it was an area that we could cause problems.

“He launched one (throw) the other day and we thought, ‘Yeah, we’ll set up and use it’. Credit to the lads because there is still a lot else that goes into set pieces that not everybody will see, the blocks and the movement and connecting those pieces. It was a really, really enjoyable goal.

“We know how important set pieces are. Credit to Nick (Stanley), credit to the lads for taking it on board. I was delighted for Harry to get off the mark. We need goals from all areas.”

Instead of Darling, Wrexham chose to sign Conor Coady from Leicester City to add some experience to their backline.

However, the Dragons have so far shipped five goals in two league matches and Phil Parkinson wants more signings.

The Wrexham Insider exclusively revealed earlier this month that Calum Chambers has been looked at.

Jack Robinson and Chris Mepham are Wrexham centre-back targets as well.
