When Tyrone mum Courtney Timlin found out her baby son has a rare condition affecting his ability to process protein, her first question was “will he ever be able to eat a McDonald’s?”

Charlie Johnston was born with phenylketonuria (PKU), meaning his body cannot break down an amino acid called phenylalanine, which comes from eating protein.
