Lesvos continues to gain traction as a place of authentic experiences, natural beauty and cultural ties that transcend borders. This was highlighted by the visit of the Consul General of France in Athens, Diane Roeser, who was on the island, meeting the Mayor of Western Lesvos, Taxiarchis Verros, in the presence of the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Afroditis Vati.
Ms. Roeser, who attended the last day of the Molyvos Classical Music Festival, stated that she was impressed by the natural wealth and authenticity of Lesvos, thanking the municipality for the cooperation with the French community – visitors and permanent residents of the island.
The Deputy Mayor for Tourism presented the multidimensional tourist product of the place: from birdwatching and cycling/walking routes, to the Petrified Forest, the thermal springs, the monasteries and the picturesque villages. “Tourism is of strategic importance for Western Lesvos and France can play a decisive role in its support and promotion,” stressed Ms. Vati, underlining the rich cultural program that the island already hosts.
In the context of the meeting, the prospect of highlighting the relationship between Albert Camus and Sigri was also discussed, with the proposal to create a “Camus House” and to name a street in honor of the French philosopher, as a sign of Greek-French friendship and cultural continuity.
The Honorary Consul of France for Lesvos and Lemnos, Sofia Baroutsaki-Tsirigoti, in turn highlighted the Municipality’s practical support in youth issues, noting that these initiatives give hope and perspective to the new generations.
