According to VisitEngland’s latest August Bank Holiday Trip Tracker survey, it was revealed that 11.2 million Brits were definitely planning to take an overnight holiday trip within the UK during the bank holiday weekend. This activity was estimated to deliver an economic boost of £4.1 billion.

The figures were noted to be slightly higher than those recorded in the previous year, when 11 million people had expressed the same intention. In 2023, the figure had stood at 9.7 million. The increase was expected to provide welcome support for the tourism sector, which has seen a decline in domestic overnight trips by 5%, from 32.6 million in 2024 to 31.1 million in 2025 by the end of May.

Government Perspective on Tourism

It was highlighted by the Culture Secretary that destinations across Britain, from Cornwall and Cumbria to The Gower and Glasgow, were viewed as valuable assets for the nation. The tourism industry was described as vital to the economy, with expectations that more people travelling this year would not only create memorable experiences but also generate employment and stimulate wider economic growth.

Industry Insights from VisitEngland

The Chief Executive of VisitEngland noted that the strong interest in domestic trips was encouraging, with a wide range of destinations available to suit all preferences and budgets—from globally recognised museums and art galleries to vibrant food and music scenes, as well as natural coastlines and countryside.

It was also observed that businesses were depending on the August bank holiday weekend to deliver a late summer uplift after what had been described as a mixed year for many destinations. Consumer behaviour research revealed that the cost of living continued to influence decisions, with many people booking at the last minute, searching for affordable options in accommodation, dining, and activities.

Undecided Travellers

The survey further indicated that 7.3 million people were still undecided about whether they would take an overnight trip. The reasons most frequently cited were the need to assess affordability, uncertainty about weather conditions, and waiting for deals or special offers to become available.

Tourism’s Role in the Economy

Tourism was emphasised as one of England’s largest and most valuable industries, driving economic growth and supporting communities across the country. The August bank holiday weekend was therefore positioned as a crucial opportunity to reinforce recovery and sustain momentum in the sector.
