In Yellowstone National Park, a distant grizzly bear sighting can be as exciting as an up-close roadside view because it requires a keen eye and the animals are in more of a natural setting.

The bears had been grazing in Lamar Valley near the highway. They created a significant “bear jam” before they crossed toward the northern foothills.

The cubs, born during the hibernation season, were enjoying their first spring. The tiny bruins were curious and playful, but did not stray far from mom.

It was smooth traveling up the slope until the bears had to quickly navigate around a bison herd, with newborn calves, that stood its ground.

The bears continued up the slope, becoming smaller and more difficult to track.

They were too far for me to capture a detailed image at this point. But I’ve included cropped versions of other images from the same sighting.

The bears eventually vanished from view and I returned to my vehicle, wondering if this sighting could be topped.
