A 16-year-old has been arrested following an alleged serious assault on a 15-year-old boy on Barry Island on Tuesday, August 12. The incident is reported to have happened near the Paget Road car park at around 7.30pm and the victim suffered minor injuries, requiring hospital treatment.
The boy, from the Gwent area, has since been released on bail. Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about who was responsible to make contact.
Police had previously addressed how deeply concerned people had been after witnessing the “cowardly and vicious attack”, which occurred in a very popular area of Barry Island and they said “could’ve ended far worse”.
Footage of the incident has been shared widely online which appears to show a group of youths repeatedly kicking and hitting a teenage boy while he lay on the ground. It has sparked outrage amongst the wider community.
Detective Inspector Phillip Marchant, of Barry CID, said: “I am sure the local community will be pleased to know that we have made an arrest. Our investigation into the incident is continuing and anyone who may be able to assist is urged to get in touch.
“Local officers are continuing to patrol the area during these busy summer months to ensure the public are able to enjoy what the area has to offer feeling safe and reassured.”
South Wales Police are urging anyone who has any information about the incident to contact them and quote the reference number 2500258409.
