Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr has shared his thoughts on a potential heavyweight clash between Deontay Wilder and Francis Ngannou.
Former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion Wilder made his much anticipated return to the ring after a 12-month hiatus back in June, defeating fellow countryman Tyrrell Anthony Herndon via seventh round stoppage at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita on June 27.
As for Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion made the transition into professional boxing back in 2023, suffering a narrow split decision defeat to Tyson Fury in his debut before returning against Anthony Joshua five months later, suffering a brutal second round stoppage defeat to ‘AJ’ in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
With rumours now circulating about a potential fight between ‘The Bronze Bomber’ and Ngannou taking place next, four-division world champion Jones Jr has spoken out and shared his verdict on what he believes will happen should the hard-hitting duo lock horns.
In an interview with Covers, Jones admitted that he believes Wilder would get the better of Ngannou, as he claims the 39-year-old’s boxing ability and devastating punching power would be too much for the UFC legend.
“Wilder will beat Ngannou because he knows how to box, he knows what boxing is about, and you saw what Anthony Joshua did to Ngannou, well Wilder is known for having a much more devastating punch than Anthony Joshua. If Anthony Joshua hit him like that and did that to him, what’s going to happen when Deontay Wilder lands?”
Wilder has already expressed his intentions to return to the pinnacle of the heavyweight division in the future, as he sets his sights on defying the odds and becoming a two-time world champion after what has been a disappointing run of form for the American.
