The United Kingdom has extended Operation Interflex, its flagship training programme for Ukrainian troops, through at least the end of 2026.

The decision was confirmed by Defense Secretary John Healey on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day, as the country marked 34 years since declaring independence from the Soviet Union.

More than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits have already been trained in the UK under the initiative, which is supported by 13 partner nations and is considered one of the largest training schemes of its kind worldwide.

According to the statement, the mission is evolving to meet Ukraine’s changing battlefield requirements. While the early focus was on rapid basic combat training, the programme now includes leadership and instructor courses, preparing soldiers for command roles and enabling them to pass on knowledge to new recruits.

UK`s Defense Secretary stressed that the UK remained united in its support for Ukraine and would continue working with allies to strengthen Kyiv’s defences. He noted that, amid ongoing Russian attacks, it was essential to place Ukraine’s Armed Forces in the strongest possible position. As efforts toward peace continue, he added, Ukraine must also become the most effective deterrent to secure a lasting settlement.

“Supporting Ukraine’s defense supports the UK’s own national security,” the government said in its statement, stressing that training and equipment provided by Britain have given Ukraine a vital edge on the frontline, where Russia continues to lose more vehicles and equipment than Ukrainian forces.

Officials noted that the programme also allows British troops to gain valuable insights from Ukraine’s battlefield experience, while deepening military-industrial cooperation that supports jobs and innovation in the UK.

At the same time, the UK is deepening cooperation on the industrial front. Following talks in London, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced that Britain will finance the production of air defense systems and long-range weaponry in Ukraine.

“Developing Ukraine’s defense industry was a key focus of the discussions. The UK has already invested in our weapons production, and this cooperation is ongoing. Specifically, funding will be directed toward manufacturing air defense systems and long-range weaponry,” Umerov said.

Earlier, it was reported that Britain is preparing to deploy its forces to Ukraine to assist in protecting the country’s airspace and maritime ports, while stressing that they will not operate near the front line against Russia.
