Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini has issued an update on Leon Bailey’s injury.

Bailey left Aston Villa to join the Serie A club on loan for the season last Wednesday, but was dealt an instant blow in his first training session in the Italian capital.

In a statement on Thursday, Roma said: “At the end of the training session on Wednesday 20 August, Leon Bailey suffered a suspected myotendinous tear of his right rectus femoris.

“In the next few hours, the player will undergo further diagnostic tests to establish the precise extent of the injury.

“Bailey has already begun rehabilitation treatment at the “Fulvio Bernardini” sports center.”

Speaking at a press conference, Gasperini said: “What happened to Bailey is incredible. We’re gutted for him.

“It’s an injury that’s hard to explain, especially given the seriousness of it. It’s a shame. A real shame.

“Given how close we were to this game, I don’t know how useful he would have been but he probably could have featured.

“It’s strange to see such a serious injury from a normal movement.”
