It’s time for our Monday wrap of who has their name in lights and who is making the headlines for all the wrong reasons after the weekend.

THEY’RE ON FIRE!

Argentina: They have done it again. Los Pumas defeated New Zealand for the second straight year but this time they finally got the win on home soil. It has been a long wait for Argentina supporters to see their beloved team get one over the All Blacks in the flesh and Buenos Aires was understandably jubilant after their 29-23 victory. It was richly deserved as they dominated for large periods on Saturday with this result possibly a springboard for a real title push for Rugby Championship glory.

Two 10s: Hats off to Handre Pollard and Santiago Carreras for the key roles they played in South Africa and Argentina’s triumphs over the weekend. Pollard was faultless off the tee as he racked up 15 points against the Wallabies and also provided a steely edge in the fly-half shirt after problems in round one. Elsewhere, Carerras was thrust into the action early on for the injured Tomas Albornoz and was outstanding for Los Pumas, slotting long-range kicks and steering them to a special win.

Julia Schell: Six tries in 22 second-half minutes was outrageous from the Canada full-back as she kicked off her Rugby World Cup in stunning fashion on Saturday. Canada’s 65-7 win over Fiji was all but wrapped up by half-time as they went in 24-0 to the good. Schell hadn’t crossed the whitewash at that point but what followed was incredible to watch. She scored a hat-trick in four minutes (50′, 52′, 54′) before going over thrice more in the 61st, 69th and 72nd minute for a rapid double hat-trick.

Ellie Kildunne and World Cup opener: A crowd of 42,723 watched as the Red Roses and USA kicked off the Women’s Rugby World Cup in style at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on Friday. While Ilona Maher was in action for the USA, the star of the show was England full-back Kildunne, who yet again caught the eye in a white jersey. She scored two tries, assisted two more and ran for a game-high 153 metres as the Red Roses eased to a 28th straight win in a great start to the tournament.

Codie Taylor: While the result was definitely not what he was hoping for, the vastly experienced hooker became the 14th All Black to reach a century of caps on Saturday and only the second hooker to do so, following in the footsteps of the great Keven Mealamu. Taylor raised the proverbial bat against Los Pumas and led the haka prior to the action. What a servant he was been to the jersey since making his debut in 2015 and despite being 34 years of age, he looks to have plenty left in the tank.

Ranfurly joy for veteran duo: Waikato won the coveted Ranfurly Shield over the weekend in a special moment for the side that includes former All Blacks Aaron Cruden and Lima Sopoaga. Trailing to Taranaki since the 23rd minute, it was another Waikato late show as Xavier Roe’s try on 69 minutes, converted by Sopoaga, made it 22-20. Then came more drama when Sopoaga had a penalty attempt with a minute left and despite the ball falling off its tee he composed himself to nail the winner.

COLD AS ICE!

All Blacks: They were outplayed and outfought by Los Pumas in a sobering result for New Zealand. Scott Robertson’s side simply could not live with Argentina’s desire and prolonged high-tempo performance as they fell to their first defeat of the Rugby Championship campaign. It has sparked a barrage of criticism, not least from one New Zealand pundit who launched a rant over the loss, and the response against South Africa simply has to be marked or another piece of unwanted history will be theirs.

Asenathi Ntlabakanye blow: Shocking news broke on Sunday when it was confirmed that Springboks front-row Ntlabakanye had tested positive for a banned substance in a random test conducted by the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport. The tighthead will no longer play a part in the Springboks’ upcoming Rugby Championship games against the All Blacks, instead being given the time to defend his case. How the story unfolds will be interesting but this is concerning for Ntlabakanye.

Wallabies injury issues: A significant blow hit the Wallabies’ Rugby Championship hopes over the weekend when Tom Wright was forced to leave the field early on against South Africa. It has since been confirmed that the in-form full-back has suffered an ACL injury, which only heightens worries over his future involvement this year. Australia also lost Nic White and Joseph Suaalii against the Boks after the pair failed HIAs, with their absence not helping their hopes of prevailing in Cape Town.

Wales going from four to two: Former Wales hooker Ken Owens summed it up best by stating: “The issue with all this is, we’re forgetting about the cultural element of it and what the effect of dropping two teams, going from four to two, is going to have on the communities across Wales and no one’s really listening to that.” That’s the fear for many as the Welsh Rugby Union considers cutting two regions in order to save the game in Wales. The game is at a crossroads with a huge decision looming.

Prop punished: A prop was rightly banned from playing in England after telling a female referee to “get your baps out” in a drunken rant whilst watching one of his club’s games. Casey Johnson of Ossett RUFC has been ordered to stop playing rugby for 32 weeks after admitting to the incident in front of a Rugby Football Union panel. The shameful incident, which happened earlier this year, led to Johnson being found guilty of ‘conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and the game’.
