Leeds United surpassed the £100m mark on the weekend with the signing of James Justin from Leicester City for a £10m fee, an impressive feat given Leeds are yet to sell a senior player this summer.

A total of 10 signings that have cost £108.5m, even though Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined on free transfers. Sunderland and Burnley have spent more, but both have sold players.

Sunderland have raked in almost £50m after selling Jobe Bellingham while Burnley cashed in on their star goalkeeper, James Trafford. Leeds have not made a senior sale this summer, but have agreed some loans.

Rasmus Kristensen’s permanent move to Frankfurt is on this year’s books, though that deal was done in April and only cost £7.7m. Diogo Monteiro joined Arouca from Leeds U21s, but that is about to change.

The signing of Justin was always expected to allow Isaac Schmidt to leave Leeds. The Switzerland player managed less than 100 minutes of league action last term and in a World Cup year, needs to leave Leeds.

Reports said earlier this month that Schmidt’s move to Max Wober’s Werder Bremen was close to being done. But over the weekend, Schmidt was left in limbo as Werder closed in on Yukinari Sugawara.

But, it seems Schmidt will be off to Werder Bremen after all. The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reports on X on Tuesday morning that Schmidt is set to join Werder, and will join them for a permanent £3m fee.

McGrath posted: “Isaac Schmidt has pathway cleared for move to Werder Bremen after Leeds went into the full-back market. German club have been negotiating deal worth around £3m for the 25-year-old.”

How much have Leeds lost on Isaac Schmidt after 2024 move?

It is less than a year since Leeds pulled off a deadline-day move in the 2024 summer window to sign Schmidt from Swiss side St. Gallen. But it is clearly a move that has not gone to plan for both parties.

Reports at the time said Leeds had agreed a total package worth £4.6m for Schmidt. He signed a four-year deal, meaning each year was split into £1.15m. That means a £3.45m fee sees Leeds break even.

But with Leeds set to accept a £3m fee as per McGrath, Leeds will be making a loss of £450,000 on the defender. That is of course, if all the add-ons were met in Schmidt’s move to take his fee to £4.6m.
