Leeds United somehow lost to a ragtag Sheffield Wednesday side on penalties in the Carabao Cup.
It took the Whites 81 minutes to find a way through against their financially-stricken opponents in the second round of the League Cup.
Substitute Jayden Bogle fired home from close range to equalise after Karlow Darlow had made a hash of a simple cross, pushing the ball into his own goal.
After 90 minutes, the scores were tied at 1-1 and the tie went to a penalty shootout in front of Hillsborough’s empty North Stand.
And in the ensuing shootout, all three of Leeds‘ penalty kicks were saved by debutant Ethan Horvath with Wednesday claiming a stunning cup upset.

Karl Darlow – 2
Darlow’s howler gifted Wednesday the lead. A nothing cross was somehow spilt from between his fingers and dribbled over the line, bring back Lucas Perri.
Sam Byram (off for Bogle 71′) – 7
Lively. Bogle will likely remain the first choice for now, especially after scoring the equaliser, but Sam Byram has given Farke a lot to think about going forward, really solid performance.

Sebastiaan Bornauw – 8
Strong debut showing. The former Wolfsburg defender’s introduction at Leeds has been delayed by the existence of good options ahead of him, but it will only be a matter of time before Sebastiaan Bornauw is given a starting role on his showing against the Owls.

Jaka Bijol – 8
Brilliant. Jaka Bijol joined Leeds this summer from Udinese, and sat out the first game of the season having been sent off at the end of the last campaign in Italy. Put simply, the Slovenian has to be a start moving forward.
Jack Harrison – 9 – Player of the Match
What if Jack Harrison isn’t a bad player, but just a bad winger? The former Everton man was unbelievable at left-back and looked incredibly comfortable there. Food for thought.
Ilia Gruev (off for Stach 71′) – 5
Solid distribution. But Ilia Gruev seemed incapable of truly taking control of proceedings and was replaced midway through the second half.
Sean Longstaff – 6
Sean Longstaff is never lacking in energy, but the former Newcastle man still seems to be finding his feet after joining Farke’s side in the summer. Missed his penalty in the shootout to condemn his side to defeat.
Brendan Aaronson (off for Gnonto 58′) – 3
Horrid. Brendan Aaronson was given an opportunity to stake his claim in Farke’s starting XI going forward. He did not take it.

Joel Piroe – 6
Joel Piroe has struggled to translate last season’s performances in the Championship to the Premier League, but against second-tier opposition once again, the Dutchman was far more impactful. However, the attacking midfielder Leeds’ first penalty in the shootout.
Noah Okafor (off for Dan James 84′) – 7
Noah Okafor joined Leeds from AC Milan this summer, and whilst the Swiss striker was unable to score, he looked a threat throughout.
Lukas Nmecha (off for Calvert-Lewin 58′) – 3
Lukas Nmecha scored on his Leeds debut, but there was no repeat of that magic in a dismal performance against Wednesday.
Substitutes
Wilfried Gnonto (on for Aaronson 58′) – 8
Immediately added a threat down the left-hand side and but for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s wasteful finishing, he would have had three assists, rather than the one he got from teeing up Bogle for the equaliser.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on for Nmecha 58′) – 3
Had to score. Somehow, the former Everton man wasted two golden opportunities to win the game, but at least he was in the right positions. Calvert-Lewin then skied his penalty in the shootout.

Anton Stach (on for Gruev 71′) – 7
The German midfielder was fabulous on his debut against Everton and once again added huge quality in the middle of the park upon his introduction.
Jayden Bogle (on for Byram 71′) – 8
Scored the all-important goal to send the tie to a penalty shootout and showed his attacking capabilities from right-back.
Dan James (on for Okafor 84′) – 7
As he so often does, Dan James made things weirdly chaotic in a good sense. His pace scares the life out of defenders and despite two poor showings so far, he will undoubtedly be a key piece for Leeds this season.
