Talisman Jay Stansfield is a major doubt for Birmingham City’s trip to Leicester City after taking a whack on the ankle in Tuesday’s defeat to Port Vale.

The striker came off worse in a challenge with Vale left-back Liam Gordon in stoppage time and could be seen hobbling around before the final whistle.

Stansfield was on crutches at Blues’ training ground on Wednesday afternoon and is currently wearing a protective boot. It must be said that Tomoki Iwata left Huddersfield Town on crutches last season before starting against Rotherham a few days later.

Blues manager Chris Davies said: “Jay had a little bit of a knock towards the end of the game and was limping. He’s being assessed by the medical department today so I haven’t got the full extent of what exactly that is. We can’t add any more detail to it but he did take a knock.”

Stansfield, who has scored three goals already this season, was introduced as a half-time substitute to try and drag Blues back into the Carabao Cup tie against Vale.

“I always planned to give the boys some game time because I wanted them to get some minutes under their belt,” added Davies.

“I knew certain players like Marvin (Ducksch) and Kanya (Fujimoto) weren’t going to be able to last anyway, so I had planned to give them some time in that second half and I thought Jay and Paik (Seung-ho) could come in and really improve our level.

“They did to a certain extent but what was really frustrating was that it was pretty much the last kick of the game that Jay got a knock. These things happen, this is football. It’s really unfortunate but we don’t know how severe it is. It’s something you can’t do too much about.”
