London City Lionesses have completed the signings of midfielder Katie Zelem and defender Alanna Kennedy from Angel City.

Both players had time remaining on their Angel City contracts and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side said an undisclosed transfer fee had been agreed with London City.

The move sees both players return to the Women’s Super League (WSL) with the division’s newest side following spells in the NWSL. Zelem, 29, joined Angel City in the summer of 2024 following six years at Manchester United. Kennedy, 30, joined the following January, having spent the previous three-and-a-half seasons at Manchester City.

Kennedy has started 16 of Angel City’s 17 NWSL fixtures this season, while Zelem has made 15 appearances but with just six of those coming as a starter.

The move for the pair continues a busy transfer window for London City, who are owned by Washington Spirit and Lyon Feminin owner Michelle Kang, following their promotion to the WSL. Spain defender Jana Fernandez, Netherlands midfielder Danielle van de Donk and England international Nikita Parris are among the players to move to the club this summer.

Zelem joined Manchester United ahead of their first season in the Championship in 2018 and captained the side to their 2024 FA Cup triumph — their first major trophy. She has been capped 12 times by England and was part of Sarina Wiegman’s squad at the 2023 World Cup.

Kennedy has previous WSL experience with Tottenham Hotspur and won the 2022 League Cup during her time at Manchester City. The centre-back also won the NWSL in 2016 with Western New York Flash and has been capped 139 times by Australia.
