A tree on Durdham Downs in Bristol that narrowly missed a pedestrian when it fell on Monday (August 25) morning was due to be removed by the council.

The tree ended up falling on a parked car, smashing through the windscreen and window.

Speaking to Bristol Live, a witness said: “This tree limb spontaneously fell right in front of me this morning and crashed into this car.

“I think I was on Westbury Park Road next to the Downs. Neighbours said the council was planning on cutting it down soon because it’s diseased.”

Photos show the tree smashed into the car, with one branch going through the windscreen and out the driver’s window.

Bristol Live contacted the council, which confirmed that the tree was “due to be removed before one of the limbs came down earlier this week”.

A spokesperson for the council said in a statement: “I’ve now managed to speak to the officer closest to this case and can confirm the tree was assessed in June and a job was raised to carry out works to the tree. It was due to be removed before one of the limbs came down earlier this week.

“Since Monday our contractors have visited to remove the broken limb and the rest of the tree.”
