Ryan Reynolds delivered a heartfelt farewell to departing Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer, calling his departure a “gut punch” and quipping that his mother would be devastated to lose her “boyfriend”. The Hollywood actor, who jointly owns the Welsh side with fellow star Rob McElhenney, turned to Instagram to say goodbye to Palmer after his transfer to League Two outfit Swindon.

Palmer netted 46 goals across 156 matches for the Red Dragons and played a crucial role in the team’s remarkable journey from the National League to the Championship through three consecutive promotions under their celebrity ownership. Reynolds hasn’t overlooked the 33 year old’s vital role in the club’s meteoric rise.

“Ollie is a big reason we’re in this league today.

“Not to mention the boundless charisma and charm…he harnessed a lifetime of talent, heart and work-ethic to push @wrexham_afc and the town forward,” he posted.

“Spending time with Ollie’s incredible family: his wife, Caitlin, amazing kids and his dad, Andy, are forever-memories. Ollie is my friend now and always.

“The silver lining is @officialstfc is an excellent club and they get to experience that same feeling @robmac and I felt as Ollie steps onto the pitch at The County Ground to push Swindon FC forward and up the pyramid. Thank you, Ollie.”

Reynolds also made clear his mother Tammy wouldn’t be pleased with the development.

He continued: “P.S. for the love of all that’s holy, DO NOT tell my Mom her boyfriend is changing shirts. Tam-Tam is unpredictable.

“Swindon can expect her to storm the pitch to provide fresh orange slices to Ollie without warning.”

Palmer told Swindon’s website he was “excited” to join them.

He added: “The ambition here is clear, and I want to play my part in helping the team push up the table and compete for promotion.”

Palmer was in the final year of his deal at Wrexham.

Wrexham have had a tough start to life in the Championship, with the club currently winless from three games and sitting 19th in the table.

Today they visit Milwall for a 3pm kick-off and will be hoping to gain momentum ahead of the visit of QPR after the international break.
