Coco Gauff is into the third round of the US Open again, having enjoyed a far more streamlined win over Magdalena Frech.

Realistically, it could only get more relaxed for the American, who cut a tearful figure both mid-way and immediately after her last victory against Donna Vekic.

There, she admitted that the nerves and the pressure were, at times, just too much, and it was not helping her already well-documented weaknesses.

However, ever the fighter, Coco Gauff continues to drag herself through the draw, and will now await the winner of Naomi Osaka’s match against Daria Kasatkina.

Speaking live on Sky Sports immediately after the match, Martina Navratilova was keen to praise the 21-year-old for the routine manner of her win.

Before she started lauding Gauff though, Navratilova first pointed out what she noticed about her box and their instant reaction after the match had concluded.

She claimed: “Yeah, I think her box was pretty excited because it was so much more simple and stress-free.

“Yeah, I think it’s easy to overanalyse and it’s really hard to narrow down to what’s important, you know, and just focus on one or two things, and then the rest is just noise.

“It’s hard to shut that noise out when things are really going bad for you, but today she handled it much better.”

The 18-time singles Grand Slam champion then explained what she thought made the difference for Gauff this time around: “I think the fact that she got off to a quick start, off, and then all of a sudden, two games really iffy tennis. She came, put it together, reset herself, held her serve at 3-3, and then gets a break and it was all over after that.

“But it could have been dicier at 3-3 after she got off to a solid start, but she kept it together. I’d probably give her a B plus for the day.”

After that emotional evening earlier this week, Lindsay Davenport implored fans to ease off Gauff. After this comfortable win, hopefully that will now be the case.

Coco Gauff’s peculiar preference for the day session

Almost every American tennis player loves playing at the US Open, and Gauff is no different.

However, the difference between playing a day session or a night session is, ironically, night and day.

After all, the latter is far more electric and moody, liable to explode with noise and energy that can unsettle and add pressure.

The day session, meanwhile, is calmer and more reserved, thus making it an easier environment for playing tennis.

Gauff has admitted a preference for the day session, but has only been granted that request once this tournament. If she is to face Osaka in the fourth round, there’s no way that such a high-profile clash does not get scheduled under the Arthur Ashe floodlights.
