There are some films that seem to have an exponentially larger impact on us as children than as adults, with some sequences completely knocking our socks off as we marvel at the mechanics of a scene and struggle to fathom how it was ever brought to life.

It could be ET the Extra-Terrestrial and the life-like presence of the lead alien, or the impressive battle sequence in The Chronicals of Narnia, with CGI creatures that look far better than most animated projects being made now, but there are many that grabbed the entirety of our attention as children, having us fawning over something that perhaps won’t have the same impact on us today.

Perhaps it was our childlike wonder, innocence, or lack of knowledge about filmmaking that made these spectacles so much more immersive, but regardless, we still look back on them with fondness and remember the days in which we couldn’t take our eyes off the screen. But there is one franchise that still has the same effect on us as adults, and one that stayed with Samara Weaving and became the sole basis of her career.

Weaving has had an eclectic career to date, starting on a similar path to Margot Robbie as someone who hails from Australia and began her career on the classic soap opera, Home and Away. But since those early days, she has gone on to become a ‘scream queen’ in Ready or Not, a temper tantrum-throwing diva in Babylon and a certified veteran of the independent filmmaking scene.

While she might be honing her sights on the horror genre, the actor was first drawn to acting after watching one classic pirate adventure story for the first time, describing her love for Pirates of the Caribbean and the enormous influence it had on her life.

When discussing this, Weaving said, “There was a small film…don’t know if you’ve heard of it…it was called Pirates of the Caribbean. It blew my socks off. I think I was 11 or 12 years old, and I just wanted to be a part of whatever just happened to me in that theatre. I was transported to another world, and I wanted to be part of it so bad”.

Whether it be the elaborate costumes, grimy-looking pirates or the enormous impact of Kiera Knightley wielding a sword, there are many things to love about the franchise and all the things it achieved. The special effects were unlike anything ever previously seen, with the sight of Davy Jones’ slimy beard springing to mind as one of the more genius uses of their technological talents. As well as this, it was fun, action-packed and full of surprises, perfectly capturing the danger and thrilling pull of such an illicit criminal world.

Given that Weaving has worked with Margot Robbie and is also friends with the fellow Aussie actor, perhaps there’s a chance that her childhood dream will actually come true, with the former being rumoured to be working on an all-girl adaptation of Pirates of the Caribbean. Perhaps dreams can come true, and maybe Weaving will soon reprise her destiny by playing an unruly pirate.
