Firefighters were called to the Shree Sorathia Prajapati Community Centre on Cleveland Road yesterday (August 30) at 8pm to reports of a building fire.
The single-storey centre was fully alight, the London Fire Brigade reports.
It was eventually under control by 9.21pm, with no reports of any injuries.
However, the building itself has “sustained a significant amount of damage”.
Images show the Hindu centre engulfed by flames, and smoke billowing into the air.
Redbridge Council warned last night that there’d be significant disruption around the area near Ilford Lane and the majority of roads running between there and Sunnyside Road due to road closures.
Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The Brigade received around 14 calls about the fire and Control Officers mobilised six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Ilford, Barking, Stratford, Leyton, Hainault and Romford fire stations to the scene.
“A 32-metre turntable ladder from Dagenham Fire Station also attended and was used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above.”
