Each week during the high school football season, the American-Statesman honors individual achievement by naming a player of the week and awarding game balls to individuals who stood out.

Here are our selections for Week 1:
The Raiders quarterback had a sensational opener in a 55-34 victory over Connally, completing 23 of 30 passes for 375 yards and six touchdowns. The Navy pledge threw three of his touchdowns to receiver Aubryn Davis.
• Kaiden Haynes Collins, Weiss DB: He had 5 tackles and a pick-six TD in a 56-28 win over McNeil.
• Jack Devine, Regents QB: Private school signal-caller was a double threat in the 55-48 win over Lorena (321 pass yards, 104 rush yards, 5 TDs).
• Alfredo Lopez, Rouse WR: Lopez was a big-play specialist in the victory over Connally, catching 4 passes for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
• Maverick Jacobs, Wimberley RB: The Texan senior rushed for 102 yards and 3 TDs as Wimberley roared back from a 28-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Canyon Lake 36-35.
• Luke McBride, Lake Travis QB: In his first varsity start, the Cavalier senior completed 23 of 37 passes for 386 yards and 4 touchdowns in the victory over Arlington Martin.
• Justin Tardy, San Marcos RB: The Rattler senior rushed for 161 yards and 3 TDs, 1 from 76 yards, and caught 6 passes for 89 yards in a 40-27 victory over Hutto.
