Today, Google is making a major move to get Vids into the hands of a much wider audience by releasing a new, no-cost option for all consumers. And at the same time, it’s adding some powerful new generative AI tools for its paid subscribers.

Vids is now free for everyone

This is the biggest news of the day for the largest number of people. For the first time, the basic Google Vids editor is now available to consumers with a standard Google account at no cost.

According to Google, this free version includes “all the tools you love, just without AI capabilities.” This means you’ll have access to the core video editing functions like trimming clips, adding text, arranging your story, and more. It’s a fantastic move that makes a great, simple video editor accessible to everyone, right from within the familiar Google Drive interface.

Powerful new AI tools for subscribers

For paid Google Workspace customers and Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers, Vids is getting some impressive new generative AI features. Headlining the update is an all-new experience that lets you turn static images into short videos, powered by the state-of-the-art Veo 3 model.

Paid users will also get access to other new AI features, including AI avatars and automatic transcript trim, further enhancing Vids as a powerful, AI-assisted video creation tool. To help everyone get up to speed, Google is also launching a new “Vids on Vids” instructional series.

This is a fantastic, two-pronged update that makes Google Vids a more compelling product for everyone. Making the core editor free is a huge step for the platform’s adoption, and the new AI features continue to add compelling value for paid subscribers.
