Firefighters were called to battle a blaze which started in the laundry room of a property in the centre of Wales’ smallest city. The incident happened in a property on High Street in St David’s, Pembrokeshire, on Monday night.

Crews from Fishguard, Haverfordwest and St David’s were sent to the scene of the fire, which broke out in a three-storey property used for residential and commercial purposes. It’s believed the fire started in a tumble dryer. Images from the scene show that the fire spread throughout the laundry room, causing extensive damage.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and the fire service has said it was lucky that doors inside the property were closed otherwise the fire could have spread elsewhere in the building. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7.32pm on Monday, September 1, crews from St David’s, Fishguard and Haverfordwest Fire Stations were called to an incident on St David’s High Street.

“Crews responded to a fire within a three-storey property consisting of a mixture of commercial and residential properties. The fire was confined to a laundry room on the property’s first floor.

“Crews utilised six breathing apparatus sets, three hose reel jets, thermal imaging cameras and a turntable ladder appliance to extinguish the fire. After extinguishing the fire, crews were involved in removing debris from the laundry room to avoid re-ignition. The fire is believed to have started in a tumble dryer in the laundry room.

“This incident has highlighted the effectiveness of keeping doors closed within a property, as the closed doors prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the property.”

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police were also called to High Street on Monday evening and shut the road for a period of time while fire crews attended the affected property.
