Aside from those “rural rival” rumors, Kate Middleton and Prince William have been happily married for years. But reminder that the pair actually broke up back in Spring 2007—and now William’s former butler, Grant Harrold, is spilling everything he saw go down behind the scenes when they got back together.
Apparently Grant served Kate and William a private Valentine’s dinner in 2008 when they were rekindling their relationship. “It was just the two of them. It was really nice, quite special actually,” he said, per People, adding that it was “a romantic dinner for them, they very much interacted with me throughout.”
Grant noted that before that dinner “they weren’t [really] holding hands — it was very much William’s friend. After that, when they got back together, it absolutely changed, and it was very much them as a couple. Something changed, and you knew they were a couple, and from then on, it was very much a waiting game… After they got back together, I was convinced they would get married. We didn’t know how long it would take.”
In case you need a reminder of just how DRAMATIC William and Kate’s breakup was, there was a lot of speculation at the time. Ranging from Kate accidentally using the word “toilet” in front of the queen (known as Toiletgate) to William moving to an army camp and putting long distance pressure on their relationship. Plus, there were reports that William allegedly ended it with Kate during an “emotionally charged 30-minute conversation.”
Obviously everything worked out in the end, but take a look back at their relationship below.
