Spire Southampton Hospital has maintained its overall ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an unannounced inspection of its surgical services.
The hospital also received ‘Good’ ratings across all surgical areas, including safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership.
Thelma Henderson, hospital director at Spire Southampton Hospital, said: “We are proud to have maintained our ‘Good’ rating and especially pleased that inspectors recognised our commitment to safe, personalised care for our NHS and private patients, and community collaboration.
“Our teams work tirelessly to ensure patients feel safe, informed, and supported, and we are pleased that the inspectors have recognised the role we play within our community.”
The CQC highlighted the hospital’s positive safety culture, noting its openness, honesty, and commitment to learning from other hospitals.
Staff were described as qualified, skilled, and experienced, with patients reporting that they felt cared for and supported throughout their treatment.
One patient told inspectors: “I honestly couldn’t ask for more.
“All staff (are) lovely, caring, and super professional.”
The hospital’s support for patients with dementia and neurodiverse needs was also praised.
The CQC commended Spire Southampton’s community engagement and partnerships with the local NHS trust and Integrated Care Board, which have helped reduce waiting lists and improve access to care.
The hospital was also recognised for its investment in advanced technology.
In 2024, it installed a £1.8m da Vinci surgical robot to treat prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers.
Spire Southampton is one of only three hospitals in England – and the only independent hospital – to receive consecutive annual commendations for cardiothoracic care.
The hospital has now maintained this status for ten years running.
Spire Southampton Hospital has 67 inpatient beds across four wards, a critical care unit, and a 17-bed day care unit.
It also has six operating theatres, an endoscopy suite, and a cardiac catheter lab.
The outpatient department includes 16 consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, and a minor operations suite.
Across the UK, 98 per cent of Spire Healthcare’s inspected hospitals and clinics are rated ‘Good’, ‘Outstanding’, or the equivalent.
