Four people were taken to hospital following a crash that closed a section of one of Wales’ busiest roads for a time. One person is reported to be in a “serious” condition after the crash on the A55 in Flintshire.
Emergency services, including police, paramedics, fire crews and an air ambulance, were at the scene of the collision between junction 32 Holywell and junction 33 Northop, causing significant delays in both directions. A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed they had been at the scene and an air ambulance was also sent.
The spokesperson said: “We were called on Thursday at approximately 11.13am, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A55 expressway, near junction 33 of the eastbound carriageway.
“We sent two emergency ambulances, an operations manager and a Cymru High Acuity Response Unit to the scene.
“Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in a Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter. Four patients were conveyed to hospital by road for further treatment.”
North Wales Police added: ” Shortly before 11am on Thursday, we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A55 eastbound near Northop.
“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Welsh Ambulance Service University NHS Trust, and the Wales Air Ambulance.
“One lane of the A55 was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, and the vehicle was recovered. Four people were taken to hospital, including one with serious injuries. The road fully reopened at around 1.30pm.”
The air ambulance returned to its base at Caernarfon after the incident.
A Wales Air Ambulance spokesperson confirmed: “I can confirm the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region today (04/09/25). Our Caernarfon-based crew were allocated at 11:17 and arrived at the scene, via air, at 11:50. Our involvement concluded at 12:55”.
The traffic chaos was further worsened by a second multi-vehicle collision near Caerwys which, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system, occurred “within the queues” caused by the initial crash.
