Berrisford – runner-up in the 2020 and 2023 events – led the elite field from across the county with rounds of 70, 71, 69 and 66 at Cleveland Golf Club, concluding on August 21.

It gave him a 12-under-par total and a two-shot victory over Oliver Caton (Crosland Heath) and Habib Khan (Huddersfield).

Speaking to the T&A, Berrisford, who represents Ilkley Golf Club, admitted he was delighted to have finally secured the title.

He said: “I’m thrilled to have won it, particularly because of the close calls in the past.

“The feeling of pride and happiness remain despite the championship taking place a couple of weeks ago.”

Berrisford added: “It’s right up there in terms of what I’ve achieved in my amateur career so far and means even more given it’s a tournament so close to home.

“I’ve also played in this tournament more than any other, so it’s a great feeling to be able to finally win it.”

Now that he is won the Yorkshire Amateur Championship, a prestigious and well-regarded tournament, Berrisford is eyeing up more silverware in the future.

He said: “Winning competitions such as the Yorkshire Amateur, it does give you that drive and hunger to go and accomplish more in your career. It certainly gives you the taste for it.

“It also backs up all the time and effort you’ve put into practice over the years and motivates you to keep at it.”

Rounds of 70, 71, 69 and 66 secured Berrisford the victory – a score that the Ilkley golfer was more than pleased with.

He said: “What I was most pleased with was my consistency across the week. I didn’t do an awful lot wrong.

“I aimed to stay in the mix, which I did, and the final day worked out really well for me.

“Under the circumstances and with final-round nerves, to score 66 (the best score for any round across the week) was pretty amazing.

“The puts started to drop when they needed to, which is something that doesn’t always happen.

“On this occasion, I was grateful that they did.”

Berrisford added: “I was also pleased with the way I bounced back in the second round after scoring a triple bogey.

“It stood me in good stead for the rest of the competition.”

Victory at the Yorkshire Amateur Championship means Berrisford has qualified for the English Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions, which takes place on September 13 at Woodhall Spa Golf Club.

Looking ahead to the event, Ilkley Golf Club’s star talent admitted that he’s looking for more of the same.

He said: “Firstly, I would like to just play well and with confidence, as I have been doing in recent competitions.

“I’ve played the course before and I know it’s a good one, so I’m looking forward to it.

“If I play well, then hopefully I’ll be in the mix to win it. That’s certainly the aim heading there.”
