Former Super League winger and current pundit Jon Wells has hit out at the actions of one Hull FC forward for an ‘assault’ on Hull KR star Mikey Lewis.
That’s how Wells described Jack Ashworth’s swinging arm toward a prone Mikey Lewis, who was laid on the ground after being tackled by the Hull FC forward.
It was one of several acts late on in the game that the disciplinary panel will be certain to check out on Monday with the game, which was never of a high quality, descending into a very scrappy affair as the result became inevitable.
Hull KR won 18-4 but Hull FC were well in it until Jack Broadbent scored the third try, making it 14-0, and that was another try that came following an altercation involving Mikey Lewis.
Lewis was tackled five yards out and recieved plenty of attention from Cade Cust who seemed to forget his job at marker, with Jack Broadbent then able to scoot over from dummy-half.
Jon Wells fumes at ‘disgusting’ act on Hull KR star
Cust and Lewis simply engaged in some pushing and shoving but it was Jack Ashworth who took matters too far as he tackled Lewis and then swung his elbow/arm towards the Hull KR talisman’s face.
The refereeing team missed the incident but one man who didn’t was Sky Sports pundit Jon Wells who was working commentary for the game.
“It’s disgusting, there’s absolutely no place for it on a rugby field,” reacted the former Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers man.
“That was dirty, dirty play.”
Upon seeing another replay, he exclaimed: “Look at this, that’s ridiculous. He’ll be ashamed of himself when he sees that back, Jack Ashworth.
“Some of the stuff we’ve seen in the last few minutes isn’t rugby league, it’s basically assault.”
Ashworth already has disciplinary points on his record and any further charge tomorrow could result in a ban, meaning Hull FC will be missing another player in an already depleted pack.
