The organisers of a soapbox racing event in south Bristol say it will go ahead despite thunderstorms across the city this morning (Sunday, September 7).

The event will see 40 makeshift go-karts take on the Krazy Races course at Victoria Park, Bedminster, created by local businesses, groups of friends and engineers.

However, shortly after 8am this morning, the South West received a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, with the risk of “intense rain” and hail.

Despite the city being battered by the weather, Krazy Races has announced that the event will be going ahead today, as the warning is set to clear at midday.

Krazy Races said: “We want to reassure everyone that today’s event is going ahead!

“Due to this morning’s thunder and lightning, we have been monitoring conditions closely.

“The good news is that the bad weather is expected to pass shortly, with a brilliant afternoon of racing ahead.

“For safety reasons, gates will now open from 11am, with racing scheduled to start at 12pm.

“Our racers are here, ready to give you a fantastic day of entertainment.

“Please keep an eye on our official Krazy Races social media channels for live updates before you travel. Thank you for your patience – we can’t wait to see you soon!”

The main event, the racing, will also feature live music, stalls and street food. Tickets start at £17 for an adult and £12.50 for children aged between five and 16, as children four and under can enter free.

Organisers have said picnics are welcome, but there will be food vendors on site as well. Spectators are not allowed to bring alcohol into the event but there will be bars on site.

The Krazy Races event is a big fundraiser for local charities wherever it goes, and Bristol’s has partnered with a number of charities after a public vote earlier this year. One of those chosen is Many Minds, a Bristol-based charity which uses art and creativity to support people with mental health issues.
