Power supplies were severely disrupted after Russia targeted the Trypilska thermal power plant south of the capital with Shahed drones.
The Energy Ministry confirmed that “one of the thermal generation facilities in Kyiv region came under heavy fire…. Rescuers and energy workers are currently working to eliminate the consequences of the shelling. We are doing everything possible to stabilise the situation as quickly as possible.”
Airstrikes also hit Vasylkiv Air Base in Kyiv region, while Pokrovsk in Dnipropetrovsk was attacked by drones, triggering more blackouts.
Ukraine retaliated with strikes on Russian-occupied Donetsk and Makiivka, where six civilians, including a 14-year-old girl, were reportedly wounded in Gulliver Park.
The escalation came as Donald Trump signalled fresh sanctions against Russia, while also hinting at direct talks with Vladimir Putin.
“They are losing – between Ukraine and Russia – 7,000 soldiers every single week,” Trump said. “It’s such a horrible waste of humanity. So, no I am not thrilled with what’s happening there, I will tell you. I believe we are gonna get it settled. But I am not happy with them. I am not happy with anything having to do with that war. “Putin’s goal is to take over all of Ukraine,” Zelensky stressed. “[Putin] certainly wants to fully occupy us. For him, that is victory. And until he does that, the victory is on our side. So for us, survival is victory. Because we survive by preserving our identity, our country, our independence.”
Military analyst Alexander Kovalenko echoed warnings of more devastating raids, noting that Russia has stockpiled large numbers of Shaheds and other drones.
“All this indicates that the threat of a repeated massive, concentrated raid by Russian forces remains quite high,” he said. “September could very well become a record month for raids.”
