Nacho Novo is convinced Oscar Cortes can still be a hit for Rangers.

The attacker has headed out of Ibrox for the season on loan as he looks to get consistent minutes under his belt after suffering an injury nightmare since joining the Light Blues.

Russell Martin has undertaken a massive summer overhaul and with the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Oliver Antman coming in to add to the winger ranks, he’s allowed the 21-year-old to head to Spain with Sporting Gijon.

They are a club that, like Rangers, mean the world to Novo who admits the duo are ‘the teams of his life’.

Cortes made a late cameo in the Premiership opener with Motherwell as well as the Champions League clash on the road at Plzen.

He also turned out at left-back for 84 minutes of the Premier Sports Cup last 16 win over Alloa Athletic.

Three main traits stand out for Novo who is convinced he ‘has something’ and can be a big player for Rangers in the future.

Speaking to El Comercio, he said: “A good player. He’s fast, good in one-on-one situations, and a good goal scorer.

“I haven’t been able to see him regularly because he’s had some injuries, but I like him. He’s got something.”

Asked if they had spoken since his switch to Spain, Novo explained: “No, but I spoke to him once when he was here in Glasgow.

“He’s a very calm kid. I would like to speak to him to tell him he’s joined a very big club and to wish him the best, that I’m sure he’ll have a good season.

“He’s a bet for the future for Rangers, and I think he’ll succeed at Sporting. He’ll put in a good performance.”

He added: “Rangers and Sporting are my two clubs. The teams of my life. Rangers, imagine what I’ve experienced in Glasgow.

“That’s everything. I have a huge affection for Sporting.

“I’ve even thought, when my son is older, about buying a little house in Gijón and moving there.

“It’s a beautiful city, with good people, and Sporting is one of the greats in Spain.”
