Merseyside Police has issued an update following a serious crash on the M57. Emergency services were called shortly after 3pm today (Wednesday, September 10) to reports of a single-vehicle collision on the northbound side of the M57 near junction 3 in Knowsley.
On arrival, crews found a car had veered off the motorway and caught fire. The condition of the driver or any passengers involved has not yet been confirmed.
An air ambulance landed at the scene, alongside several fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles.
Initially, only the northbound carriageway was closed, but National Highways later confirmed the southbound side had also been shut and would remain closed for the rest of the evening.
However, in an update this evening, Merseyside Police said the southbound carriageway has now reopened. In a statement posted to X, the force said: “The southbound carriageway between junction 3 and 2 on the M57 has now reopened. The northbound carriageway between junction 2 to 3 will still remain closed overnight. Please avoid the area and find an alternative route.”

Motorists reported standstill traffic earlier this evening, with congestion stretching back to junction 4 (Knowsley). Drivers were urged to avoid the area, with diversions through Huyton in place.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “Road closures are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area while the matter is being dealt with. Further updates will be issued once available.”
